Conflict Warning Systems Installation in Denver Metro

About the Project

The Colorado Department of Transportation and contract partner Sturgeon Electric will be starting work to install conflict warning systems at intersections in multiple locations in Douglas and Jefferson Counties on CO 74, CO 83 and CO 86.

Highway conflict warning systems use sensors and flashing lights/signs to alert drivers to potential collisions at dangerous intersections, especially those with poor sightlines or high crash rates, significantly reducing crashes at rural stops.

Locations include:

  • CO 74 and Kerr Gulch at Mile Point 1
  • CO 83 and Gillian Ave between MP 37 and 38
  • CO 83 and Russellville Road between MP 41 and 40
  • CO 86 and Deerfield Road/Flintwood at MP 11

Project Benefits

Highway conflict warning systems use sensors and flashing lights/signs to alert drivers to potential collisions at
dangerous intersections, especially those with poor sightlines or high crash rates, by dynamically warning major road drivers about cross-traffic and minor road drivers about approaching vehicles, significantly reducing crashes at rural
stops.

Work Schedule

  • The project is set to begin March 9, 2026
  • Work is expected to be completed late May 2026
  • Normal working hours will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday

Traffic Impacts

Motorists can expect the following impacts during the period of construction:

  • Gillian and Russellville locations will have single lane closures
  • Deerfield at Flintwood locations will just have shoulder closures
  • Speeds will be reduced through the work zone
  • Refer to COtrip.org for real-time travel conditions and road closures
