Paving Operations to Prohibit Westbound C-470 to Southbound University Boulevard Movement This Weekend

March 4, 2011 - TRAFFIC ADVISORY - Denver Metro Colorado/CDOT Region 6 - DOUGLAS COUNTY — Starting at 9 p.m. tonight, March 4th and continuing until 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 6th, the left turn lane from westbound C-470 to southbound University Boulevard will be completely closed for concrete removal and replacement at the interchange.

In addition, one lane of northbound University Boulevard at C-470 will be closed from 9 p.m. tonight until approximately 1 p.m. on Saturday.  The remaining through lanes and other turn movements at the interchange will not be impacted.

“We need to remove and replace the concrete on this side of the interchange, which is a longer process than most of our construction activities” said Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) Project Engineer George Warda.  “Once we remove the existing concrete, we can pour the new concrete and then let it cure for 12 to 18 hours until it reaches strength.  While the concrete is curing, motorists will not see any visible work taking place, but the closures are still necessary so the concrete can cure properly.”

During the closure, motorists on westbound C-470 needing access to southbound University Boulevard can take westbound C-470 to Broadway and return to eastbound C-470 for access to southbound University Boulevard.  All lanes will reopen by 5:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Delays are expected and alternate routes are advised.  CDOT would like to remind motorists to plan ahead, obey all construction signs and flaggers and “Slow for the Cone Zone.”  Most fines for infractions that occur in the work zone will be doubled.

This work is part of a safety improvement project in three locations on University Boulevard and Wadsworth Boulevard.  The project will remove and replace deteriorating concrete at University Boulevard and C-470 and University Boulevard and Dry Creek Road.  In addition, the traffic signal at Wadsworth Boulevard and Coal Mine Avenue will be upgraded.

New Design Construction Co. is the contractor of the project, which is scheduled to be complete by the end of July 2011.  This $3.1 million project is being funded through Funding Advancements for Surface Transportation and Economic Recovery (FASTER), which is dedicated to improving safety and replacing poor bridges.
