Kit Carson Highway Project Shutting Down for Winter

December 1, 2011 - Southeastern Colorado/CDOT Region 2 - KIT CARSON, CO. – The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will be suspending the U.S. 40/287 reconstruction project through Kit Carson for the winter next week.

Waterline work continues through next Friday (December 9), requiring intermittent lane closures from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.  The project then goes on hiatus until spring 2012.

Work began in October to reconstruct 2.3-miles of the highway through the Kit Carson area.

When the project resumes, the existing asphalt will be removed and the new roadway reconstructed in concrete through town.  Other improvements include new street lights, sidewalks, curbs and gutters and an upgraded storm water system.

A short segment of State Highway 59 also will be reconstructed at the U.S. 40/287 junction in Kit Carson.  The intersection will be reconfigured, with an additional northbound acceleration lane and a wider turning radius, providing easier turn movements for large trucks.
