US 6 traffic shift brings overnight closures, new look at Federal Boulevard

May 11, 2015 - Denver Metro/CDOT Region 1 - Drivers should be aware of new westbound US 6 entrance and exit pattern at Federal.

DENVER – On Monday, May 11, crews on the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT)’s US 6 Bridges Design Build Project will shift westbound US 6 traffic onto a brand new collector-distributor road, designed to collect all I-25 traffic and feed it onto westbound US 6 in a manner that will improve efficiency and driver safety.

To complete this shift of westbound US 6 traffic to the north, crews will implement overnight closures of the westbound US 6 off-ramp to Federal Boulevard and the Federal Boulevard on-ramp to westbound US 6 between the hours of 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. There will also be intermittent lane closures on westbound US 6 as needed beginning at 7 p.m.

“This critical shift will move westbound US 6 traffic close to its final location while making room for additional work on the south half of the highway,” said Kevin Sullivan, CDOT Project Director. “This brings us one step closer to the completion of this project.”

Following the shift, drivers looking to exit westbound US 6 at Federal Boulevard will do so from the left lane - a substantial change, as currently traffic exits at Federal from the right lane. Drivers on westbound US 6 wanting to exit at Federal Boulevard should prepare by getting in the left lane leading up to Federal and following posted signs to exit at the correct location.

In addition, drivers looking to merge onto westbound US 6 from Federal will do so from left to right. This means they will enter westbound US 6 from the far left lane, merging to the right. As a result, drivers in the left lane on westbound US 6 should be alert and aware of Federal traffic merging from the left.

Following the westbound US 6 traffic shift, crews will complete this important phase of US 6 traffic shifts on Tuesday, May 12, by also moving eastbound US 6 to the north, clearing substantial room on the south half of the highway. This final shift will require intermittent lane closures on eastbound US 6 as needed between 7 p.m. and 5:30 a.m.

TRAVEL IMPACTS:

  • Federal Boulevard traffic looking to access westbound US 6 should take Alameda Avenue or Colfax Avenue west to Sheridan Boulevard, and then use the Sheridan Boulevard on-ramp to westbound US 6.
  • Westbound US 6 traffic looking to access Federal Boulevard should exit at Sheridan Boulevard, take Sheridan Boulevard to either Alameda Avenue or Colfax Avenue, and then go west to Federal.

PROJECT INFORMATION: The $98 million US 6 Bridges Design-Build Project will replace six obsolete bridges on US 6 between Knox Court and I-25, improve traffic movements in the I-25 and US 6 interchange and enhance driver safety by eliminating several traffic weave movements along US 6 between Federal Boulevard and I-25. Substantial project completion is planned for fall 2015.

During construction, commuters might want to consider alternative modes of transportation to help ease the impacts of the project. This could include using the Regional Transportation District’s West Rail Line or bus service or taking advantage of carpool/vanpool options. For information on RTD services, call 303-299-6000.
