Daytime I-70 Lane Closures Required to Affix Lettering at Veterans Memorial Tunnels

July 10, 2015 - Central/Eastern Colorado Region 1 - To ensure proper alignment of the letters being affixed above both Veterans Memorial Tunnel portals, crews will be working along I-70 in Idaho Springs during the daytime hours next week.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is minimizing daytime lane closures along the I-70 mountain corridor during the summer months, but on occasion activities like this one that are difficult to perform at night when artificial lighting casts a shadow on the work area.

To adhere the Veterans Memorial Tunnels lettering, crews will close lanes in each direction of I-70 between the hours of 4:30 and 10 a.m. Monday, July 13, through Thursday, July 16. On Monday and Tuesday, there will be single lane closures in the westbound direction and Wednesday and Thursday, double lane closures in the eastbound direction. Motorists should plan their travels accordingly and allow extra time for traveling into the mountains these days.

Crews will take advantage of these lane closures to also do some final painting and lighting work in the tunnels. These activities are part of the final phase of work at the tunnels. Other restoration activities this summer include working on a retaining wall along County Road 314 and creating and trailhead and parking area along Clear Creek. Project completion is set for late summer with a tunnel dedication ceremony to take place in September.
