96th Avenue On-Ramp to Eastbound I-76 Closed Overnight May 1-2 for Major Traffic Shift

JEFFERSON COUNTY—From 7 p.m. Monday, May 1 to 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 2, motorists can expect delays on eastbound Interstate 76 while crews move temporary barrier and restripe the highway.

Traffic Impacts

  • 7 p.m. Monday, May 1 to 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 2: Crews will temporarily close the 96th Avenue on-ramp to eastbound I-76.
  • 8 p.m. on Monday, May 1 to 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 2: Eastbound I-76 will be reduced to a single lane while crews shift travel lanes onto new permanent pavement placed during Phase 1 of the I-76 at US 85 reconstruction project.
  • All 96th Avenue on-ramp traffic will be directed onto westbound I-76 to make a U-turn at the 88th Avenue interchange.
  • The peed limit is reduced to 55 mph on I-76, and 45 mph on US 85. Fines are double.
  • Lane widths are reduced to 11 feet through the work zone.
  • An oversized vehicle width restriction of 15 feet is strictly enforced. Westbound I-76 oversized vehicles must exit I-76 by CO 2 (Sable Boulevard), exit 16. The width restriction also applies to eastbound I-76. Eastbound over-width vehicles must exit by 96th Avenue, exit 11.
  • All work is weather-dependent and subject to change.

Detour Route

To access eastbound I-76 from 96th Avenue, the signed detour will direct motorists to:

  1. Enter westbound I-76 at the roundabout.
  2. Proceed on westbound I-76 for approximately one mile.
  3. Exit the highway at 88th Avenue (exit 10).
  4. Turn east (left) on 88th Avenue.
  5. Turn north (left) to enter eastbound I-76.

Shifting eastbound I-76 traffic onto new pavement allows permanent construction to begin on the inside lanes of I-76 during Phase 2. Concurrent with the eastbound I-76 work, crews are constructing an elevated section of westbound I-76 between the northbound and southbound US 85 ramps.

About the Project

This work is part of the I-76 at US 85 reconstruction project, safety-improvement work that is being completed by contractor Villalobos Concrete Inc. through late 2017.

This project will improve the geometry of the westbound I-76 curve where the interstate joins southbound US 85. This transition area will be upgraded to current design standards to improve safety and traffic flow.

An additional travel lane from southbound US 85 to 96th Avenue will be built with the project. Portions of I-76 will also be replaced with new concrete pavement. Additional project features include improved roadway drainage, lighting and water-quality measures.
