Huerfano County – As construction and paving operations progress in the US 160 Widening Project, in Huerfano County, the Colorado Department of Transportation wants to inform motorists of upcoming traffic impacts in the work zone starting today, Tuesday, Sept. 12.

On Tuesday, Sept. 12, work schedule will include milling operations on US 160 from mile markers 294 and 296.5, north of La Veta. For the safety of crews and motorists, traffic will be placed in a single-lane configuration from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., with traffic stops of up to 15 minutes to direct traffic from eastbound to westbound lanes.

From Sept. 13 – 16, Wednesday to Saturday, crews will be working on the embankment to build up paving operations at the intersection of US 160 and Valley Road (CR 350), near mile marker 295, north of La Veta. This will result in the following traffic impacts:

  • This configuration will be in effect from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday, Sept. 16.

  • To assist motorists, detour signs will be in place directing traffic to safely access the area.

  • Traffic from US 160 can use Highway 12 (North Main Street) to reach La Veta

  • Traffic heading to CR 350 will be detoured to Moore Ave. (CR 358)

  • Motorists are advised to add up to 20 minutes to their driving time.

Starting next week, on Monday, Sept. 18, crews will begin paving operations on US 160, with expected completion in late October. During this operation, motorists should expect:

  • Eastbound and westbound traffic will be placed in single-lane configuration, with flaggers holding traffic for up to 15 minutes. This configuration will be in place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

All work is weather-dependent and the schedule is subject to change.

The closure or CR 350 is part of the US 160 Widening Project, which consists of road widening operations and asphalt paving, signing, striping, and construction of a new passing lane on US 160. The ramps on I-25 in Walsenburg will also be improved as part of this project.
