About the Project

The Colorado Department of Transportation and its contracting partner, SEMA Construction, began improvements along Interstate 25 from Garden of the Gods Road to Fillmore Street in Colorado Springs at the end of October. The project will enhance safety for Colorado’s traveling public by adding acceleration and deceleration lanes. The anticipated completion date of the project is late August 2026.

The growth of the community and business expansion has necessitated the initiation of the improvement project. Continuous acceleration and deceleration lanes will be added to both the northbound and southbound directions of I-25, spanning from Garden of the Gods Road to Fillmore Street. These auxiliary lanes aim to even out traffic flow and assist drivers in merging and exiting traffic efficiently. Additionally, to enhance road safety, the roadway will undergo resurfacing and adjustments will be implemented to address drainage concerns on the road, as well as the installation of permanent stop signs at Chestnut Street after the project is completed.

While working on the auxiliary lane project, the aging bridge on I-25 over Ellston Street will be reconstructed and widened. Additionally, bridge deck repairs will be made on the Garden of the Gods overpass structure. Upgrades to the intelligent transportation system (ITS) infrastructure (fiber optics and ramp meter station) will help with the flow of traffic to monitor, trigger and time vehicle release with automatic vehicle and queue detection to mitigate any traffic backups by adjusting meter timing.

Project Benefits

Auxiliary lanes help to balance traffic and facilitate the positioning of drivers at exits and the merging of drivers at entrances.
Resurfacing the roadway will create a smoother surface.
To help with drainage issues on the roadway, curve cross slope corrections will be made.

Work Schedule

Daytime work hours are Sunday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Nighttime work hours are Friday and Sunday, 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Traffic Advisory

The planned full closure of northbound Interstate 25 at Garden of the Gods Road (near Exit 146) on Friday, April 3 has been delayed by one week to Friday, April 10. During the planned overnight closure, crews will be repairing the bridge deck at Garden of the Gods Road.

This closure is necessary for the safety of the traveling public. During the planned overnight, full closure, crews will be conducting bridge deck repairs and the removal and replacement of expansion devices on both ends of the bridge.

The full closure of northbound I-25 at Garden of the Gods Road and detour route will be in effect from:

10 p.m. on Friday, April 10, to 4 a.m. on Saturday, April 11

Tentatively, the full closure of northbound I-25 at Garden of the Gods Road and detour route will be in effect from:

10 p.m. on Saturday, April 11, to 4 a.m. on Sunday, April 12
10 p.m. on Sunday, April 12, to 4 a.m. on Monday, April 13

The Fillmore Street on-ramp to northbound I-25 will be closed 24/7 from 10 p.m. on Friday, April 10, to 4 a.m. Monday, April 13.

To complete the bridge deck repairs, the following upcoming closures are anticipated, and a detour route will be in effect. Advance notice and project updates will be communicated to the public ahead of these activities.

April 17: Full overnight closure of southbound I-25 at Garden of the Gods Road
May 1: Full overnight closure of northbound I-25 at Garden of the Gods Road
May 8: Full overnight closure of southbound I-25 at Garden of the Gods Road

Traffic Impacts

On the evening of Friday, April 10, and tentatively Saturday, April 11, and Sunday, April 12, motorists can expect the following impacts:

Beginning at 7 p.m., northbound I-25 at Garden of the Gods Road will be reduced to two lanes.
From 10 p.m. to 4 a.m., there will be a full closure of northbound I-25 at Garden of the Gods Road. The following detour route will be in effect:
- Motorists traveling northbound on I-25:
  - Take Exit 146 to Garden of the Goods Road
  - Turn right on Garden of the Gods Road
  - Turn left on North Nevada Avenue
  - Continue straight to reconnect with northbound I-25
Two lanes will reopen at 5 a.m. on Saturday, April 11, and Sunday, April 12
All lanes will reopen at 6 a.m. on Monday, April 13
The Fillmore Street on-ramp to northbound I-25 will be closed 24/7 from 10 p.m. on Friday, April 10, to 4 a.m. Monday, April 13. The following detour route will be in effect:
- Motorists traveling west on Fillmore Street to connect with northbound I-25:
  - Continue straight on Fillmore Street past the northbound I-25 on-ramp
  - Take a right at Centennial Boulevard to Garden of the Gods Road
  - Take a right on Garden of the Gods Road and reconnect with northbound I-25.
- Motorists traveling east on Fillmore Street to connect with northbound I-25:
  - Continue straight on Fillmore Street past the northbound I-25 on-ramp
  - Take a left on North Nevada Avenue
  - Continue straight to reconnect with northbound I-25
