I-70 Twin Tunnels Weekly Traffic Advisory

January 29, 2013 - Central Eastern Colorado/CDOT Region 1 - Blasting Operations Canceled This Week

IDAHO SPRINGS – Daytime and overnight lane closures continue through the week at the Twin Tunnels on Interstate 70 at the east end of Idaho Springs for rock drilling, scaling, grouting and wall construction.  However, the scheduled blasting is being postponed due the snowstorm and the possibility of additional snow within the next 24 hours. It is expected to be rescheduled for next week.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will continue with the following closures:

  • Tuesday, January 29

o    Until 5 p.m. – Left lane closed westbound

o    6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Wednesday – eastbound I-70 closed.  Traffic reduced to one lane in each direction through the westbound bore

  • Wednesday, January 30

o    6 a.m. to 3 p.m. – Right lane closed eastbound

o    11 a.m. to 5 p.m. – Left lane closed westbound

o    6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Thursday – eastbound I-70 closed.  Traffic reduced to one lane in each direction through the westbound bore

  • Thursday, January 31

o    11 a.m. to 5 p.m. – Left lane closed westbound

o    6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Tuesday – eastbound I-70 closed.  Traffic reduced to one lane in each direction through the westbound bore

  • Friday, February 1

o    6 a.m. to 1 p.m. – Right lane closed eastbound

The speed limit is reduced to 35 mph while the traffic lanes are reduced.

Adding a third lane to eastbound I-70 from east Idaho Springs to the bottom of Floyd Hill is part of CDOT’s strategy at reducing congestion along one of the state’s busiest corridors which, in turn, will improve gas mileage and air quality.
