I-70 Twin Tunnels Weekly Traffic Advisory - Blasting Operations Ahead

January 24, 2013 - TRAFFIC ADVISORY - Central Eastern Colorado/CDOT Region 1 - IDAHO SPRINGS – Daytime and overnight lane closures are scheduled next week at the Twin Tunnels on Interstate 70 at the east end of Idaho Springs for rock scaling, blasting and drilling work.

Grouting and wall construction also is taking place.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will implement the following closures:

  • Monday, January 28

o   6 a.m. to 3 p.m. – Right lane closed eastbound

o   11 a.m. to 5 p.m. – Left lane closed westbound

o   6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Tuesday – eastbound I-70 closed.  Traffic reduced to one lane in each direction through the westbound bore

  • Tuesday, January 29

o   6 a.m. to 3 p.m. – Right lane closed eastbound

o   Approximately 11 a.m. – Rock blasting: All traffic stopped for 15 to 20 minutes

o   11 a.m. to 5 p.m. – Left lane closed westbound

o   6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Wednesday – eastbound I-70 closed.  Traffic reduced to one lane in each direction through the westbound bore

  • Wednesday, January 30

o   6 a.m. to 3 p.m. – Right lane closed eastbound

o   11 a.m. to 5 p.m. – Left lane closed westbound

o   6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Thursday – eastbound I-70 closed.  Traffic reduced to one lane in each direction through the westbound bore

  • Thursday, January 31

o   6 a.m. to 3 p.m. – Right lane closed eastbound

o   11 a.m. to 5 p.m. – Left lane closed westbound

o   6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Friday – eastbound I-70 closed.  Traffic reduced to one lane in each direction through the westbound bore

  • Friday, February 1

o   6 a.m. to 1 p.m. – Right lane closed eastbound

o   Approximately 11 a.m. – Rock blasting: All traffic stopped for 15 to 20 minutes

The speed limit is reduced to 35 mph while the traffic lanes are reduced.

Adding a third lane to eastbound I-70 from east Idaho Springs to the bottom of Floyd Hill is part of CDOT’s strategy at reducing congestion along one of the state’s busiest corridors which, in turn, will improve gas mileage and air quality.
