Highway 50 Widening Project Begins in West Pueblo

March 12, 2013 - Southeastern Colorado/CDOT Region 2 - PUEBLO – Work is underway to widen U.S. 50 between Wills Boulevard and Baltimore Avenue.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) project also includes asphalt paving, new traffic signals, curbs and gutters, ramps, sidewalks, and new storm drains.

A majority of the work is taking place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, in the closed turn lanes between Wills and Baltimore.  It involves relocating utilities, upgrading the storm system, and installing new signals. All other lanes remain open during daylight hours.

Night work, scheduled from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday through Thursday, is minimal at this time and consists of realigning traffic lanes and placement of new streetlights.  Regular night lane closures are scheduled to begin in late April.

“This segment of Highway 50 averages almost 50,000 vehicles per day so these improvements are necessary along an important commuter and business route,” said CDOT Resident Engineer Joe DeHeart.  “Adding lanes and upgrading the intersections will improve safety and traffic flow through west Pueblo.”

Another phase of this project involves paving one mile of Interstate 25 between the north and south U.S. 50 interchanges and rehabilitating the 29th Street Bridge.  More information regarding this phase will be distributed before work gets underway in May.

Construction on U.S. 50 is expected to be completed in September; on I-25 in October.

The $5.9 million project is contracted to Kirkland Construction Company of Rye, CO.
