I-70 Twin Tunnels Weekly Traffic Advisory

July 19, 2013 - TRAFFIC ADVISORY - Central Eastern Colorado/CDOT Region 1 - IDAHO SPRINGS – Traffic on the eastbound Interstate 70 frontage road around the Twin Tunnels is flowing smoothly. However, drivers should continue to anticipate slower traffic and a 35 mph speed limit while the detour remains in place through late 2013.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will have the following lane closures in place next week, east and/or west of the Twin Tunnels, for barrier work and truck hauling operations:

  • Monday, July 22
    • 5 a.m. to 11 a.m. – left lane closed eastbound
    • 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Tuesday – left or right lane closed eastbound
  • Tuesday, July 23
    • 5 a.m. to 11 a.m. – left lane closed eastbound
    • 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Wednesday – right or left lane closed eastbound
  • Wednesday, July 24
    • 5 a.m. to 11 a.m. – left lane closed eastbound
    • 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. – left lane closed westbound
    • 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Thursday – left lane closed eastbound
  • Thursday, July 25
    • 5 a.m. to 11 a.m. – left lane closed eastbound
    • 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Friday – left lane closed eastbound & westbound
    • 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Friday – left lane closed westbound
  • Friday, July 26
    • 5 a.m. to 11 a.m. – left lane closed eastbound
  • Saturday, July 27
    • 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. – left lane closed eastbound

Drivers should be prepared for longer than normal delays while the above lane closures are in place – depending on traffic volumes.  CDOT recommends that drivers plan extra driving time for their trips through this area, primarily during daylight hours.

In addition, blasting and/or rock scaling operations will require 20 to 30 minute traffic stops at various times throughout the week, not including peak travel periods such as during holiday travel periods, Saturday mornings or Sunday afternoons. The daily blasting schedule is posted daily on the project hotline, (303) 327-4034 or webpage www.coloradodot.info/projects/i70twintunnels.

To receive project updates via e-mail, visit www.coloradodot.info and click on the cell-phone icon in the upper right-hand corner.  The link takes you to a list of items you can subscribe to, including I-70 West, Denver to Glenwood Springs.

Also, CDOT’s smartphone application provides drivers with easier access to I-70 traveler information. It includes travel speeds and times, road conditions, incidents, road work; and feeds from CDOT's closed-circuit television cameras and alerts.  Text CDOT to 25827 or download CDOT Mobile from your App store.

Adding a third lane to eastbound I-70 from east Idaho Springs to the bottom of Floyd Hill is part of CDOT’s strategy at reducing congestion along one of the state’s busiest corridors which, in turn, will improve gas mileage and air quality.
