Lane Reductions on I-25 beginning next week

July 8, 2013 - Southeast Colorado/CDOT Region 2 - Interstate 25 will be reduced to a single lane in each direction for about a month to allow extensive repairs to take place on the 29th Street Bridge.

Beginning at 6 p.m. on Monday, July 8, only one lane will be open on northbound and southbound I-25 across 29th Street.  All northbound traffic will be switched to the southbound bridge, with both directions of traffic down to one lane across the structure.   This configuration is expected to remain in place 24 hours a day, seven days a week for approximately 15 days.  When work is completed on the northbound bridge, construction then moves to the southbound bridge and all traffic switches to the northbound bridge for about 15 days.
Drivers should expect extensive delays through this area, primarily during daytime hours.
Access to and from I-25 and 29th Street will continue during construction.  Lane closures also will be in place, as needed, on 29th Street under I-25.
The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) project involves removing four inches of concrete from the top of the entire deck, then resurfacing it with new concrete, and paving the road surface with asphalt.
“We know this closure is inconvenient but it’s primarily in place for the safety of both drivers and the construction workers,” said CDOT Resident Engineer Joe DeHeart.  “By closing the entire structure, it’ll also cut the project schedule significantly because if we would have kept it open to one lane, it would have taken a few weeks longer to complete.”
Another aspect of this project involves paving one mile of Interstate 25 between the north and south U.S. 50 interchanges.  The bridge work and paving is expected to be completed before the State Fair.
This project is part of the same contract widening U.S. 50 between Wills Boulevard and Baltimore Avenue.  Construction on U.S. 50 is expected to be completed in September; on I-25 in October.
The $5.9 million project is contracted to Kirkland Construction Company of Rye, CO.
