Paving set to start on Highway 103

July 10, 2013 - Central Eastern Colorado/CDOT Region 1 - CLEAR CREEK COUNTY – The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) begins rotomilling and paving nine miles of State Highway (SH) 103, between Old Squaw Pass Road and SH 5 (Mount Evans), on Monday, July 15.

Work hours are 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday.  Operations begin at Old Squaw Pass Road and proceed westward.  Flaggers will alternate eastbound and westbound vehicles through the work zone. Drivers and bicyclists should anticipate traffic stops up to 30 minutes.

In addition to resurfacing, the project includes improving weak shoulder areas along some narrow sections of roadway to enhance vehicle and bicycle safety, clearing several culverts and inlets, new delineators and striping.

“Along with extending the lifespan of the road surface by at least 10 years, this project also contains some safety upgrades as well,” said CDOT Project Engineer Jim VanDyne.  “By adjusting the striping along the uphill shoulder area, we’re seeking to enhance safety for bicyclists by giving them a wider area to ride alongside traffic.”

Although SH 103 is a popular and heavily-traveled bicycling route, cyclists will be required to stop for their safety when directed by flaggers.  In addition, uphill cyclists will be allowed to travel through the work zone before downhill traffic is released.

The $3.2 million project, contracted to Asphalt Specialties Company of Henderson, CO., is scheduled for completion in October 2013.
