Overnight closures coming this weekend for bridge work on US 6

September 2, 2014 - Denver Metro Colorado/CDOT Region 1 - DENVER – Overnight on Friday, Oct. 3, and Saturday, Oct. 4, crews will place girders on the US 6 bridge over the BNSF railroad tracks as part of the Colorado Department of Transportation’s (CDOT) US 6 Bridges Design Build Project.

In conjunction with this work, motorists should watch for the following traffic impacts:

  • Friday, Oct. 3, 10 p.m. to Saturday, Oct. 4, 5 a.m.: Crews will close westbound US 6 at the bridge over the BNSF railroad tracks. There will also be various overnight lane closures as needed on eastbound US 6 and the northbound I-25 off-ramp to westbound US 6 to maintain driver safety while trucks access the area.
  • Saturday, Oct. 4, 10 p.m. to Sunday, Oct. 5, 5 a.m.: Crews will close the northbound I-25 off-ramp to westbound US 6, as well as the right lane on northbound I-25 near the US 6 interchange for continued girder placement efforts. There will also be various, brief closures of westbound US 6 at the bridge over the BNSF railroad tracks to maintain driver safety while trucks access the area.

NOTE: Lane closures will begin at about 8 p.m. each night, with the full closures in place at 10 p.m.

“We will do our best to minimize impacts to the driving public during this work,” said Kevin Sullivan, CDOT Project Director. “We encourage drivers to use alternative transportation methods such as RTD’s Light Rail service, especially if they are attending the Great American Beer Festival in Denver this weekend.”

TRAVEL IMPACTS:

  • Westbound US 6 closure (Friday): To detour around this closure, westbound US 6 traffic will enter northbound I-25, take the off-ramp to westbound Colfax Avenue, take Colfax Avenue west to Federal Boulevard, take Federal Boulevard south to access the on-ramp to westbound US 6.
  • Northbound I-25 off-ramp to westbound US 6 closure (Saturday): To access westbound US 6 from northbound I-25, drivers should take either Alameda Avenue, 8th Avenue or Colfax Avenue west to Federal Boulevard, then use the Federal Boulevard on-ramp to westbound US 6.

PROJECT INFORMATION: The $98 million US 6 Bridges Design-Build Project will replace six obsolete bridges on US 6 between Knox Court and I-25, improve traffic movements in the I-25 and US 6 interchange and enhance driver safety by eliminating several traffic weave movements along US 6 between Federal Boulevard and I-25. Substantial project completion is planned for August 2015.
