I-70 Glenwood Canyon Opens
EAGLE and GARFIELD COUNTIES/GLENWOOD CANYON – Interstate 70 through the Glenwood Canyon will OPEN for Thursday, July 28th. Helicopter operations for rockfall mitigation were cancelled due to challenging downdrafts.
“Future closures in the canyon will now be scheduled to complete the necessary rockfall fencing work. Motorists will want to visit the Colorado Department of Transportation website, www.COTRIP.org for future dates,” said Mike Fowler, Project Engineer.
Canyon closures will be planned during the lower traffic volumes in the Glenwood Canyon. Closures will take place on either a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday from 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Glenwood Canyon Emergency Rockfall Mitigation project information
Colorado Department of Transportation launched the permanent rockfall project on May 9 in response to the major February rock slide on I-70 in Glenwood Canyon. The anticipated completion date is September 1, 2016. The project budget is estimated at around $2 million. This project is classified as an emergency project and engineering was awarded to SGM and construction awarded to Yenter Companies.
