Construction Activities & Impacts
Work this Week | June 29 to July 5
Lane closures for the week of June 29:
- Ongoing through December: Full closure of WCR 38 over I-25.
- Monday through Thursday: Intermittent closures with flaggers on WCR 34 near I-25.
The speed limit on the project has been lowered to 65 mph. Please obey speed limit signs.
Monday through Wednesday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Thursday, 7 a.m. to noon, there will be brief intermittent closures on Weld County Road 34 near I-25, controlled by flaggers, to allow truck access for dirt hauling.
Project operations will cease at noon on July 3 through Monday morning, July 7, in observance of Independence Day and the holiday weekend.
Weld County Road 38 over I-25
Weld County Road 38 over I-25, east of Mead, is closed through December 2025 to allow crews to reconstruct the bridge over the highway. Detours are in place:
- Eastbound WCR 38 traffic will take Weld County Road 7 south to WCR 34, turn east to the I-25 E. Frontage Road and turn north to WCR 38.
- Westbound WCR 38 traffic will take the I-25 E. Frontage Road south to WCR 34, turn west to WCR 7, and turn north to WCR 38.
More information on the WCR 38 bridge demolition and reconstruction:
- The current WCR 38 bridge was built in 1960, and a larger bridge is needed to span the widened I-25 section. The new bridge will have an 8-foot-wide sidewalk for multimodal connections over I-25. The new bridge will also be built “on alignment,” or in the same position as the current bridge, which was decided in coordination with the Town of Mead. Usually, CDOT replaces a bridge directly adjacent to the old bridge, to allow the old bridge to be used during construction of the new bridge. The demolition of the current bridge and the complete construction and roadway tie in of the new bridge will be completed while the WCR 38 east/west connection over the interstate is closed from June to December 2025.
- CDOT is aware this six-month bridge outage is a significant inconvenience for daily users. Ultimately, this decision will invest money in permanent infrastructure in another area of the project and save Colorado taxpayer money. CDOT will prioritize keeping the WCR 34 and I-25 interchange open during the WCR 38 bridge closure to help facilitate east/west movement across the interstate.
Additional Closures:
A temporary closure of Valley Road is ongoing to allow crews to reconstruct the bridge over the road. This closure will be in place through summer 2025. Motorists should plan accordingly, as no detour route is available.
Southbound I-25 traffic shifted to the northbound lanes between Colorado Highway 56 and Colorado Highway 66 into a head-to-head configuration and will be in place through 2025.
Approximately one mile of the southbound I-25 Express Lane, between mile points 251 and 250, from approximately Weld County Road 44 to Weld County Road 46, is closed through late 2027.

As of Friday, Dec. 15, 2023, the I-25 North Express Lanes, Berthoud to Fort Collins, hit a major milestone and is now substantially complete.
While most of the work in this section of I-25 is done, CDOT and the contractors will have various intermittent lane closures through spring 2024 to finish final project punch list tasks. The Express Lanes are now open for testing, but drivers should also prepare for intermittent closures of these lanes in 2024. Express Lane tolls are waived during the testing phase.
For future project updates and information, please continue to check the project website and CoTrip.org.
Drivers are encouraged to try the Express Lanes by entering through the dashed white lines. When using the lanes, drivers are reminded to follow these rules to ensure the safety of everyone on the road:
- Do not cross the solid white lines (tickets for violations start at $75 each).
- Enter and exit at the designated areas only, which are marked with a white dotted line.
- Obey posted speed limits. The Express Lanes cannot be used to pass slower moving vehicles.
Motorists should expect various overnight and lane closures, including in the Express Lanes, while the last of the construction wraps up and tolling equipment is installed. The Express Lanes are anticipated to begin tolling in 2024. Once tolling begins in 2024, motorists are encouraged to sign up for an ExpressToll account to save an average of 40% on tolls.
