Traffic Impacts
Construction Activities & Impacts
Work this Week | Dec. 14 to Dec. 20
Lane closures for the weeks of Dec. 21 and Dec. 28:
- Sunday through Monday at 5 a.m.: Bus ramp closures at the Berthoud Mobility Hub.
- Sunday morning: Southbound I-25 off-ramp closure at WCR 34.
The speed limit on the project has been lowered to 65 mph. Please obey speed limit signs.
Sunday through Monday at 5 a.m., the bus ramps at the Berthoud Mobility Hub at I-25 and Colorado Highway 56 will be closed for concrete remediation work. Buses will pick up riders in the adjacent Park-N-Ride parking lot.
Sunday, midnight to 5 a.m., the southbound I-25 off-ramp at Weld County Road 34 will be temporarily closed for striping operations to prepare for a traffic switch to a new lane alignment. A detour will be in place:
- Traffic exiting I-25 at Mead (WCR 34) will continue south to Colorado Highway 66, turn around and travel north to Exit 245.
Also on Sunday, midnight to 5 a.m., the southbound I-25 on-ramp at Weld County Road 34 and southbound I-25 on-ramp at CO 56 will be temporarily closed to facilitate a southbound traffic switch. A detour will will be in place:
- Traffic will detour north on I-25 to CO 60 and loop around to southbound I-25.
- There will also be alternating southbound left and right lane closures.
Project operations will cease at noon on Wednesday, Dec. 24 and resume Sunday, Jan. 4, 2026 to help minimize potential traffic delays during the Christmas and New Year Holiday. The only exception would be for emergency operations.
I-25 E. Frontage Road Access Impacts:
CDOT will permanently close the I-25 E. Frontage Road access to WCR 34, in Mead, on Monday, Jan. 5 at 5 a.m. Closing frontage road access to WCR 34 is required for crews to extend the North Creek Box Culvert as part of the I-25 North Express Lanes Project. This closure is part of CDOT’s continued coordination with the Town of Mead and Weld County, who are building a 2-mile portion of High Plains Boulevard between WCR 32 and WCR 36.
Once opened (projected summer 2026), traffic that previously used the frontage road will use High Plains Boulevard, and the frontage road use will transition to private property and utility access only. As shown on the map, local motorists will be able to access their properties between WCR 34 and WCR 36 but thru traffic will not be allowed. Similarly, local motorists will be able to access their properties between WCR 34 and WCR 32 but no thru traffic will be allowed.
Starting late January, in preparation for accommodating the I-25 northbound lane widening and the frontage roadway transition, construction crews will begin to reduce the asphalt roadway width on isolated sections of the frontage road from Mulligan Street (northeast quadrant of Colorado Highway 66 and I-25) to CO 56.
During construction, the frontage road will be closed south of WCR 32 so work crews can complete I-25 widening and drainage work. Viable detour routes and speed limit reductions will be posted. Please drive carefully through the work zones and reduced roadway section.
Additional Closures:
A temporary closure of Valley Road is ongoing to allow crews to reconstruct the bridge over the road. This closure will be in place through 2025. Motorists should plan accordingly, as no detour route is available.
Southbound I-25 traffic shifted to the northbound lanes between Colorado Highway 56 and Colorado Highway 66 into a head-to-head configuration and will be in place through 2025.
Approximately one mile of the southbound I-25 Express Lane, between mile points 251 and 250, from approximately Weld County Road 44 to Weld County Road 46, is closed through late 2027.

The I-25 North Express Lanes, Berthoud to Fort Collins, opened in December 2023 and finalized finishing touches in the spring of 2024.
Since then, the Express Lanes have been open for use in a testing phase, allowing drivers to take advantage of the new Express Lanes, without paying a toll.
The Express Lanes are currently anticipated to begin tolling in early 2026. Once tolling begins in 2026, motorists are encouraged to sign up for an ExpressToll account to save an average of 40% on tolls.
For future project updates and information, please continue to check the project website and CoTrip.org.
Drivers are encouraged to try the Express Lanes by entering through the dashed white lines. When using the lanes, drivers are reminded to follow these rules to ensure the safety of everyone on the
road:
- Do not cross the solid white lines (tickets for violations start at $75 each).
- Enter and exit at the designated areas only, which are marked with a white dotted line.
- Obey posted speed limits. The Express Lanes cannot be used to pass slower moving vehicles.
