Expect Delays on I-70 for Sign Removal

April 13, 2012 - TRAFFIC ADVISORY - Central Eastern Colorado/CDOT Region 1 - CLEAR CREEK COUNTY – Drivers on westbound Interstate 70 should expect delays in the Dumont/Lawson area today as crews dismantle the structure supporting the overhead electronic variable message sign just east of U.S. 40 – Empire Junction.

The left lane is closed just west of Downieville – Exit 233.  Since traffic is reduced to one lane, extensive delays should be expected.  In addition, at some point this afternoon, westbound I-70 will be closed at the Downieville exit for up to 30 minutes, allowing removal of the sign and structure.  It is not known what time the closure will occur but it is expected sometime in the mid to late afternoon.

“A stress crack has developed in the base of the supporting structure and we need to remove it as soon as possible,” says CDOT Regional Transportation Director Tony DeVito.  “With the possibility of adverse weather and high winds this weekend, we’re not going to take any chances.  Traveler safety is our first priority.”

All lanes of westbound I-70 are expected to reopen today by sundown.
