I-70 Closed for Sign Removal

April 13, 2012 - I-70 Update - Central Eastern Colorado/CDOT Region 1 - CLEAR CREEK COUNTY – The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has closed westbound Interstate 70 at Dumont to allow the overhead electronic variable message sign that is just east of Empire Junction to be removed.

All westbound traffic is being detoured onto the frontage road (U.S. 6 & 40), and returned to   I-70, just west of Empire Junction.  Traffic delays should be expected since traffic is reduced to one lane on the detour route.  The closure is expected to last about 30 minutes.

Another full closure of I-70 is expected later this afternoon to complete the sign removal.

CDOT needs to remove the sign today since a stress crack has developed in the base of the supporting structure.  With a forecast of wet weather and windy conditions this weekend, traveler safety requires the entire structure to be removed promptly.
