Kit Carson Highway Project Underway

April 5, 2012 - Central Eastern Colorado/CDOT Region 1 - KIT CARSON, CO. – Work is resuming for the season on the U.S. 40/287 reconstruction project through Kit Carson.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) project is resurfacing 2.3-miles of highway with concrete, installing new water and sewer lines, sidewalks, curbs, gutters and new street lighting.  It also consists of reconfiguring the State Highway 59 intersection with an additional northbound acceleration lane and a wider turning radius for large trucks.

Work hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.  Occasional traffic stops may occur during these hours, with delays up to 10 minutes.  However, traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction through town, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with a reduced speed limit of 35 mph.  Vehicles wider than 12 feet are restricted from traveling through the project area.

The $5.8 million project, contracted to Lawson Construction Company of Longmont, CO., began in October 2012.  It is scheduled for completion in autumn 2012.
