Bridge Work to Cause Delays on I-225 Near Yale Avenue on Saturday

May 17, 2012 - TRAFFIC ADVISORY - Denver Metro Colorado/CDOT Region 6 - AURORA—On Saturday, May 19th, crews will demolish the remaining portions of the bridge pier columns and remove debris on I-225 at Yale Avenue.

As a result, the left lane of northbound and southbound I-225 between Parker Road and Iliff Avenue will be closed from 6 a.m. until 2 p.m.

“Following last weekend’s bridge demolition, we still have a small portion of the pier columns remaining that we need to break up and remove,” said Project Engineer Josh Barrett.  “Since the work is taking place in the median, traffic on I-225 will be placed in a temporary alignment to the outside to give crews plenty of room to complete the work.”

Major delays are expected throughout the day and alternate routes are strongly advised. To avoid the construction zone, motorists on southbound I-225 can exit onto Iliff Avenue and travel

west to Peoria Street and then south to Parker Road where access to southbound I-225 is available. Motorists on northbound I-225 can exit onto Parker Road and travel west/north to Peoria Street and then north to Iliff Avenue where access to northbound I-225 is available.

CDOT would like to remind motorists to obey all construction signs and flaggers and to “Slow for the Cone Zone.” Fines for most infractions that occur in the work zone will be doubled.

The work is part of a project that widens I-225 between Mississippi Avenue and Parker Road to accommodate three lanes in each direction with an additional auxiliary lane.  In addition, the Yale Avenue bridge over I-225 will be replaced and other minor roadway elements will be completed to accommodate RTD’s extension of light rail from Parker Road to Iliff Avenue.

SEMA Construction Co. is the contractor of this $43 million project scheduled to be complete by the end of April 2014. The project is being funded by CDOT and RTD.
