US 160 Bridge Improvements at US 550 Junction, West Durango

May 23, 2012 - PROJECT UPDATE - Southwestern Colorado/CDOT Region 5 - Two days of heavy delays for bridge concrete work and curing

LA PLATA COUNTY –  Next Tuesday and Wednesday, May 29-30, work to protect the deck on  the four- lane bridge on US 160, just west of the US 550 junction (near the Double Tree Hotel) will be underway, causing significant traffic impacts.

HEAVY TRAVEL IMPACTS FOR 2 DAYS: A final epoxy overlay (for water proofing and protection) of the concrete bridge deck will take place. This will require all traffic to be switched to one side of the bridge each day as follows:

TUESDAY, MAY 29: As crews work on the north half of the bridge (or westbound lanes) all traffic will be on the south side of the bridge, with a single lane in each direction. Traffic impacts will begin at 7 a.m. and continue into the evening, when work and curing is complete (please note – even when work is complete, traffic will not be allowed back onto the westbound lanes until the epoxy has cured.)

WEDNESDAY, MAY 30: Crews will work on the south side of the bridge (or eastbound lanes) and all traffic will be shifted to the north side (or into the westbound lanes), with one lane in each direction. PLEASE NOTE – because inbound (eastbound) traffic will not have access to the right acceleration lane onto southbound US 160/550 through Bodo, there will be more excessive delays coming into town, as these right-turning motorists must use the signal, instead.

Roosa Avenue access impacts: There will be right-in and right-out turns ONLY at Roosa Avenue. In other words – there will be no left turns onto or off of Roosa. (Travelers from Roosa may not turn left onto US 160; travelers on US 160 headed into town (or eastbound) will not be able to make a left turn onto Roosa.)

TRAVEL IMPACTS FOLLOWING 2-DAY WORK: After the two days of epoxy work, motorists can expect only intermittent single-lane closures during daylight hours (Monday through Friday) for work on final items; there will be no impacts to traffic during peak commuting times/directions. The project will wrap up by June 15.

PROJECT INFORMATION: G.A. Western Construction of Palisade is the contractor for this $479,285 project, scheduled for completion on or before June 15, 2012.

The 45 year-old bridge, which lies between Roosa Avenue and Camino Del Rio (mile marker 83) is in need of routine maintenance, as previous work done on the structure was in 2007.

The project involves concrete bridge deck repairs and rehabilitation. Construction consists of fixing the bridge curb, patching the bridge deck to repair holes and uneven driving conditions and resurfacing the deck with two inches of new concrete.
