June 13, 2012 - TRAFFIC ADVISORY - Denver Metro Colorado/CDOT Region 6 - DENVER – Tonight, June 13th, and Thursday, June 14th, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will close all lanes of northbound and southbound Sheridan Boulevard at 6th Avenue as well as two lanes on eastbound 6th Avenue over Sheridan Boulevard to install bridge girders and bridge overhangs on the southern portion of the 6th Avenue bridge over Sheridan Boulevard.

To complete the girder and overhang installation, the following lane closures will be in place, weather permitting:

  • Northbound and Southbound Sheridan Boulevard at 6th Avenue: All lanes of northbound and southbound Sheridan Boulevard will close at 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Friday. Northbound Detour: Motorists on northbound Sheridan Boulevard will be directed onto eastbound 6th Avenue then to Federal Boulevard. In addition to the bridge girder installation, there will be daytime lane closures on northbound and southbound Sheridan Boulevard from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday and on eastbound 6th Avenue near Sheridan Boulevard from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Major delays are possible on Sheridan Boulevard and on 6th Avenue and alternate routes are strongly advised.  Motorists can take either Wadsworth Boulevard or Federal Boulevard to Colfax Avenue to avoid the construction zone.  CDOT would like to remind motorists to obey all construction signs and flaggers and to “Slow for the Cone Zone.”

This work is part of a project that replaces the 6th Avenue bridge over Sheridan Boulevard.  The original bridge was constructed in 1961 and is one of Colorado’s poor bridges. The new bridge will be wider to accommodate wider sidewalks under the bridge along Sheridan Boulevard and at the four pedestrian islands.  The medians north and south of the bridge will be modified to increase left turn storage capacity which will help with the flow of traffic on Sheridan Boulevard.

Edward Kraemer and Sons Inc. is the contractor for this $11.5 million project scheduled to be complete by the end of August 2013. The project is being funded by the Colorado Bridge Enterprise, which uses a small portion of vehicle registration fees to repair or replace poor bridges.
