US 160/South Broadway Reconstruction Includes Safety Improvements

June 21, 2012 PUBLIC OPEN HOUSE - Southwestern Colorado/CDOT Region 5 - Cortez, CO – The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and Lawson Construction will be hosting a public open house and presentation on June 28 to share details of the upcoming concrete resurfacing and safety improvements project on US 160 South Broadway.

“This project provides a much-needed full reconstruction of this stretch of highway, extending its life for at least 30 years,” stated CDOT Resident Engineer Mike Coggins. “Our work will also include upgrades at several intersections to improve safety and traffic flow for both vehicles and pedestrians.”

The existing traffic configuration at the US160/491 intersection, which currently requires a complicated crossing of north and westbound traffic, will be improved. New signalization, striping and signage will be added to clearly guide and direct motorists, and will provide a continuous and controlled movement of traffic through the intersection and on westbound US 160 and northbound US 491. Other intersection improvements will be made at 3rd and 7th streets, including storm drainage improvements at both locations.

New pedestrian crosswalks at 3rd Street will be installed. The crosswalk will include a push-button activated flashing light system that alerts motorists to pedestrian movement. A new in-pavement loop traffic detection system will be installed on 7th Street and the US 160/491 intersection. The system will also provide an audible cross walk signal to assist the visually impaired.

The public is invited to learn more about the safety features and other project details at the June 28 Public Open-House & Presentation. The open house will be at the Cortez Recreation Center and the project team will be answering questions from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. There will be a brief presentation at 6:00 p.m. A Spanish interpreter will be available.
