CDOT Improving SH 82 in Two Sections, Gerbazdale East

July 18, 2012 - PROJECT UPDATE: WEEKEND WORK - Northwestern Colorado/CDOT Region 3 - Bridge work in Shale Bluffs over next two weekends.

PITKIN / EAGLE COUNTY - The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and contractor Elam Construction of Grand Junction are progressing well on the SH 82 resurfacing project that began on June 18. As planned, several work items are scheduled for weekend work, to minimize impacts to daily commuters. The first of the weekend impacts are detailed below.

WEEKEND TRAVEL IMPACTS (July 20-22 and July 27-29) On Friday, July 20, starting at 7 p.m., there will be a continuous single-lane closure across (and between) two down-valley bridges in Shale Bluffs (at mile points 36 and 35.3) 7 p.m. This lane closure will remain in place—full time—through Monday at 3 p.m., at the latest. Then, next weekend, the second down-valley lane will be closed in the same manner starting July 27 at 7 p.m. and running through Monday, July 30, at 3 p.m. The purpose of the full-time lane closure is to allow crews to first sandblast the concrete decks to remove any debris, tire marks, etc.; apply an epoxy overlay for weather-proofing; allowing a cure time (depending upon temperatures, it can take four to six hours); applying a second epoxy overlay followed by another cure period; then striping.

REGULAR TRAVEL IMPACTS: Through the project’s completion on October 18, there will be no impacts to up-valley traffic from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and none for down-valley traffic from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. Single lane closures will be in place outside those hours. To minimize commuter travel impacts, there will be some weekend work for the following activities: paving 500 feet from Baltic Ave. and Brush Creek Road, Baltic Ave signal work, and epoxy on two bridges; Delays will vary, depending upon traffic volumes, but are anticipated to be up to 20 minutes. Motorists’ patience and safe driving is greatly appreciated. Thank you for going Slow for the Cone Zone!

This project resurfaces two sections of SH 82 and makes the following improvements:

Section 1 Milepoint (MP) 20.8 to MP 23 (Willits Lane up-valley to Basalt Ave.):  the area will receive a two-inch asphalt overlay, curb ramp upgrades, guardrail upgrades and drainage improvements that will extend to MP 26.3—further east. Paving started today

Section 2 MP 30.5 to 37.6 (Gerbazdale up-valley to Baltic Ave., which is east of the intersection of the Aspen Airport Business Center):  this section will first be milled to remove damaged asphalt (this will begin after July 9), followed by one inch of asphalt to “level” the surface and finally two inches of new asphalt; an epoxy overlay on down-valley bridges at Shale Bluffs (MP 36 and 35.3) to add weathering protection; signal upgrades at Baltic Ave.; curb ramp upgrades; guardrail upgrades; and drainage work. Crews will also make asphalt repairs to rough areas at bridge joints on six bridges in Snowmass Canyon.

The work was contracted to Elam $5.8 million. It is anticipated the project will be completed by mid-October 2012.
