Girder Installation to Cause Delays on I-225 Near Yale Avenue This Weekend

July 20, 2012 - TRAFFIC ADVISORY - Denver Metro Colorado/CDOT Region 6 - AURORA - On Saturday, July 21st and Sunday, July 22nd, crews will install bridge girders for the new Yale Avenue bridge over I-225.

As a result, there will be full closures of northbound and southbound I-225 between Iliff Avenue and Parker Road from 9 p.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday and from 9 p.m. Sunday to 5:30 a.m. Monday.

“Since the bridge demolition in May, we have been constructing the substructure of the new bridge including the pier columns and abutments,” said Project Engineer Josh Barrett.

“With the substructure now complete, we can install the girders and then start working on the bridge deck. The goal is to open the Yale Avenue bridge to traffic by early December 2012.”

Major delays are expected throughout the weekend and alternate routes are strongly advised. To avoid the construction zone, motorists on southbound I-225 can exit onto Iliff Avenue

and travel west to Peoria Street and then south to Parker Road where access to southbound I-225 is available. Motorists on northbound I-225 can exit onto Parker Road and travel

west/north to Peoria Street and then north to Iliff Avenue where access to northbound I-225 is available.

CDOT would like to remind motorists to obey all construction signs and flaggers and to “Slow for the Cone Zone.” Fines for most infractions that occur in the work zone will be

doubled.

The work is part of a project that widens I-225 between Mississippi Avenue and Parker Road to accommodate three lanes in each direction with an additional auxiliary lane.  In addition, the Yale Avenue bridge over I-225 will be replaced and other minor roadway elements will be completed to accommodate RTD’s extension of light rail from Parker Road to Iliff Avenue.

SEMA Construction Co. is the contractor of this $43 million project scheduled to be complete by the end of July 2014. The project is being funded by CDOT and RTD.
