Bridge Work to Close I-25 Near Santa Fe Drive This Week

August 28, 2012 - Denver Metro Colorado/CDOT Region 6 - DENVER— Tonight, August 28, through August 30, 2012, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will conduct bridge work for the new southbound I-25 bridge over Santa Fe Drive.

As a result, there will be various full closures of northbound and/or southbound I-25 near Santa Fe Drive as well as the ramp from northbound Santa Fe Drive to northbound I-25.

Below are the details of the closures that will be in place:

  • Northbound I-25 near Santa Fe Drive: All lanes of northbound I-25 will be closed near Santa Fe Drive tonight from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m. on Wednesday.  Lane closures will begin at 8 p.m. each night. Detour: Motorists on northbound I-25 will take the Santa Fe Drive/Alameda Avenue exit and continue past Alameda Avenue to Cedar Avenue where access to northbound I-25 is available.
  • Southbound I-25 near Santa Fe Drive: All lanes of southbound I-25 will be closed near Santa Fe Drive August 29 and August 30 from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following day.  Lane closures will begin at 8 p.m. each night. Detour: Motorists on southbound I-25 will exit onto southbound Santa Fe Drive and travel to Mississippi Avenue Travel east on Mississippi Avenue to Broadway where access to southbound I-25 is available.
  • Northbound Santa Fe Drive to Northbound I-25: The ramp from northbound Santa Fe Drive to northbound I-25 will be completely closed from 11 p.m. tonight until 5 a.m. on Wednesday. Detour: Motorists on northbound Santa Fe Drive will continue north to Cedar Avenue where access to northbound I-25 is available.

Major delays are expected tonight and alternate routes are strongly advised. CDOT would like to remind motorists to obey all construction signs and flaggers and to “Slow for the Cone Zone.”

This work is part of the I-25/Santa Fe Drive improvement project. The $32.1 million project will conduct the following improvements:

  • Replace the existing I-25 bridges over Santa Fe Drive that are currently in poor condition. Both bridges were originally constructed in 1958.
  • Construct a flyover ramp from northbound Santa Fe Drive to northbound I-25, eliminating the left side on-ramp and improving operations and safety for this major traffic movement.
  • Reconstruct and realign of I-25 from the north end of the Broadway viaduct to just south of Alameda Avenue to provide lane continuity. Once complete, there will be four lanes on I-25 in each direction through Denver from C-470 to US 36.

Hamon Contractors, Inc. is the contractor for this project, which is being partially funded by Funding Advancement for Surface Transportation and Economic Recovery (FASTER).  FASTER is dedicated to repairing and replacing poor bridges and making safety improvements on Colorado highways. The entire project will be complete by the end of July 2013.
