May 24, 2016 - Northwestern Colorado/CDOT Region 3 - CDOT supports the Forest Service efforts to perform trail maintenance

GARFIELD COUNTY — The Colorado Department of Transportation(CDOT) in cooperation with the Eagle-Holy Cross Ranger District will physically close Exit 125 (Hanging Lake rest area) and the I-70 eastbound off-ramp tomorrow, May 25 and Thurs. May 26 in support of the Forest Service efforts to perform trail maintenance. The Hanging Lake trail will be closed to provide for public and trail crew safety while crews perform heavy trail maintenance during the dates listed below.

The work will involve moving large rocks, painting the seven bridges, and installing a barrier system to protect sensitive habitats along the trail. The Forest Service will post staff at the trailhead to assist with public information.

  • May 25 and 26 – the trail crew will replace a foundation to one of the railing posts below the staircase climb.

  • June 13 and 14 – A Rocky Mountain Youth Corps crew will construct new rock steps to Spouting Rock, remove graffiti from and re-paint bridges, and clear-coat the resting benches along the trail.

  • September 10 – Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers will host their annual Hanging Lake Trail work day.
