The Live Lift - Building the future, one segment at a time

Overview

The I-70 Floyd Hill Project is entering an important, new phase of construction as crews begin work to realign westbound I-70 from its current location to the hillside south of Clear Creek.

Realigning the highway will increase safety by addressing the steep grade and sharp curve on I-70 at Floyd Hill.

What to Expect?

  • A new westbound I-70 concrete cast-in-place segmental bridge will take shape at the bottom of Floyd Hill near the US 6 interchange (Exit 244).
  • The bridge will be constructed in 15-foot segments between two piers, approximately 20 to 30 feet above the current I-70 lanes.
  • Crews will start construction at the north pier over the current westbound I-70 lanes, then shift construction to the south pier to complete the span over the eastbound I-70 lanes.
  • This construction method allows long-span bridges to be built with less impact on traffic, waterways and all nearby areas and improves safety for the traveling public and crews.
  • Intermittent overnight I-70 closures will occur as crews install, reposition and remove a movable platform, called a form traveler, to support the bridge deck during construction. Find out more information on traffic impacts below.
  • Stay focused, keep your eyes on the road, follow the speed limit and avoid distractions!

Traffic Impacts

Traffic impacts will be minimal as this method of construction allows for the free flow of traffic beneath the construction area.

During this work, crews will require intermittent overnight I-70 closures as crews install, reposition and remove a moveable platform, called a form traveler, which assists in construction and connecting bridge segments.

The closures will be overnight and will not occur during peak travel times or during heavy travel weekends. Some closures may require
multiple nights to complete the work.

Safety

Public safety is our top priority. The construction of the bridge is designed to safely allow I-70 traffic to flow normally while bridge work occurs above. Please follow the safety reminders below when traveling through the I-70 Floyd Hill work zone:

  • Stay focused and keep your eyes focused on the road. Check out construction progress photos here instead!
  • Follow posted speed limits, which are reduced to as low as 45 MPH
  • Do not follow construction vehicles and equipment into the work zone
  • Be aware of narrower lanes and shoulders
  • Put the phone down. Never drive distracted
  • Leave extra space between you and the car in front of you
  • Adjust your driving for current road conditions
  • Watch for crews so everyone can get home to their families each day
