Bridge Demolition to Close I-225 This Weekend

May 11, 2012 - TRAFFIC ADVISORY - Denver Metro Colorado/CDOT Region 6 - AURORA—Tonight, May 11th and tomorrow night May 12th, weather permitting, crews will demolish the Yale Avenue bridge over I-225 and remove the pedestrian bridge over I-225 as part of a widening/light rail extension project on I-225 between Mississippi Avenue and Parker Road.

As a result, there will be full closures of I-225 each night.  At this time, work is still scheduled to take place despite the forecast. Information will be released if the work is postponed.

To complete the bridge demolition, there will be a full closure of northbound and southbound I-225 between Parker Road and Iliff Avenue on Friday, May 11th and Saturday, May 12th as follows:

  • Friday May 11th- All lanes of northbound and southbound I-225 between Parker Road and Iliff Avenue will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. on Saturday.
  • Saturday May 12th- All lanes of northbound and southbound I-225 between Parker Road and Iliff Avenue will be closed from 8 p.m. Saturday until 10 a.m. on Sunday.

During the closures, motorists on southbound I-225 will exit onto Iliff Avenue and travel west to Peoria Street and then south to Parker Road where access to southbound I-225 is available. Motorists on northbound I-225 will exit onto Parker Road and travel west/north to Peoria Street and then north to Iliff Avenue where access to northbound I-225 is available.  Major delays

are expected and alternate routes are strongly advised.  CDOT would like to remind motorists to obey all construction signs and flaggers and to “Slow for the Cone Zone.” Fines for most infractions that occur in the work zone will be doubled.

In addition to the full closures this weekend, Yale Avenue over I-225 is closed until early December 2012 while crews construct the new bridge. Detour routes will be in place to help direct motorists around the closure. Access to businesses on Yale Street on either side of I-225 will remain open.

The work is part of a project that widens I-225 between Mississippi Avenue and Parker Road to accommodate three lanes in each direction with an additional auxiliary lane.  In addition, the Yale Avenue bridge over I-225 will be replaced and other minor roadway elements will be completed to accommodate RTD’s extension of light rail from Parker Road to Iliff Avenue.

SEMA Construction Co. is the contractor of this $43 million project scheduled to be complete by the end of April 2014. The project is being funded by CDOT and RTD.
