Colorado Bike to Work Day

2026 Summer Bike to Work Day | Wednesday, June 24, 2026

Bicyclists ride along Denver's South Platte River Trail on Bike to Work Day in 2024.

While Colorado is excited to celebrate Bike Month every June, the highlight of the activities is Bike to Work Day on June 24, when employees leave their cars at home and enjoy bicycling to work. The annual free event draws tens of thousands of Colorado commuters who celebrate the day by swapping a ride in their cars for a ride on two wheels. Participating helps improve air quality, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reduce traffic congestion. Plus, it’s fun! Studies have shown that people who commute by bike have the happiest commutes of all. Kick off your workday feeling energized, de-stressed and refreshed.

Not commuting to an office? No problem! You can still participate whether you're riding around your neighborhood, taking a quick spin before logging on at home, hitting the school drop-off line, or visiting a local breakfast station before you start your day.

How to Get Involved:

  1. Register: Sign up to ride or host a station at biketoworkday.co.

  2. Plan Your Route: Check the Denver Area Station Map for local stations offering snacks and support. Not in the Denver Metro area? See our "Find a Station" section below for links to additional community resources.

  3. Spread the Word: Invite a friend or colleague to join the challenge!

By choosing your bike, you're saving money, improving your health, and helping keep Colorado’s air clean. We'll see you out there on June 24!

What to Expect

Whether you’re a daily commuter or a first-time winter rider, Winter Bike to Work Day is all about community, fresh air, and fun. Here’s what you can look forward to:

Fuel Up with Free Breakfast: Swing by any official breakfast station to grab some morning fuel! While every station is unique, you can expect a variety of free food and beverages to keep you warm and energized (while supplies last).

Comradery and Community: You won’t be alone out there! Our trails and bikeways come alive on event days. Expect plenty of smiles, waves, and high-fives as you connect with fellow Coloradans who value life on two wheels. It’s the perfect place to make a new friend.

A Ride for Everyone: There is no "experience required" here. This event is for everyone—from seasoned cyclists to those who haven't been on a bike in years.

  • If you're a pro: Be patient and welcoming to new riders.
  • If you're new: Don’t be afraid to ask questions! We’re here to help you get rolling.

Be Summer-Ready: Colorado summers are famous for their heatwaves and sudden afternoon storms! We can see crisp 50-degree mornings turn into blistering 90-degree afternoons before you’ve even logged off for the day.

  • Check the Forecast: Review the weather before you head out. Keep an eye out for those classic afternoon thunderstorms or high-wind alerts.
  • Stay Cool & Hydrated: Bring plenty of water and wear sunscreen. Consider packing a change of clothes so you can stay fresh after your morning commute.
  • Dress for the Heat: Lightweight, breathable fabrics are your best friend. Be prepared for the temperature to climb significantly between your morning and afternoon rides.
  • Safety First: If the heat index gets too high or a storm rolls in, don't sweat it—feel free to ride another day. The goal is to have fun and stay safe!

Follow the Rules of the Road: Let’s keep our streets and trails safe for everyone by being predictable and courteous. A few quick reminders:

  • Obey the Law: Follow all traffic signs and signals.
  • Go with the Flow: Ride with traffic, not against it.
  • Use bike lanes and trails whenever possible. If you need to ride in the street, ride as far to the right, in the right lane, as practicable except when passing another vehicle, preparing for a left turn, or avoiding hazards.
  • Signal Your Moves: Use hand signals for turns and stops. Always use an audible signal (like a bell or a friendly "on your left!") before passing.
  • Be Visible: Use a headlight, taillight, and reflectors, especially in the early morning or evening.
  • Slow Your Roll: Respect a 15-mph courtesy speed limit on multi-use trails.

For a deep dive into safety, check out the Colorado Statewide Bicycling Manual.

Discover a Better Way to Move: You don't need a "work" destination to join in—ride to the grocery store, the library, or just around the block! You might just find that biking is the happiest part of your day.

No Bike? No Problem! You don’t need to own a bike to join the fun. There are plenty of ways to get rolling on Bike to Work Day:

  • Shared Micromobility: Many Colorado communities offer bike, e-bike, and e-scooter programs. Check out Spin in Fort Collins or Lime in Denver, Boulder, and Arvada to grab a ride on the go.
  • Rent for the Day: Want the full cycling experience? Many local bike shops offer daily rentals so you can test out a high-quality ride for your commute.
  • Roll Your Own Way: Have a scooter, skateboard, unicycle, hoverboard, or Segway? We love all small, low-speed, wheeled devices. If it rolls, it counts!

Host a Station

Celebrate the resilience of our winter cyclists by hosting a stop on their morning commute! By setting up a station, your organization helps foster a culture of sustainable travel while improving air quality and reducing traffic congestion across our region.

What is a station?

Stations are community hubs where riders can pause to warm up and refuel. Most hosts provide a mix of:

  • Refreshments: Hot coffee, water, breakfast items, or snacks.
  • Resources: Safety information, bike maps, or educational materials.
  • Motivation: Giveaways, branded "swag," and a friendly atmosphere to cheer on commuters.

How to get started

You can host a station independently or team up with neighboring businesses and local agencies to create a "super station" with even more to offer. Once you’re ready, register your location on DRCOG's interactive map. Be sure to include specific details so riders can easily find you on the day of the event. For more information on station hosting logistics and requirements, check out DRCOG's Bike to Work Day FAQ page

If you are located outside of the Denver Metro area and would like to host a station, contact your local municipality or other Bike to Work Day organizer for more information.

Registration

Registration for the June Bike to Work Day event opens on April 15. While you don't have to register to participate, those who register will have the chance to win prizes. Registering for Bike to Work Day also helps us show the impact of taking 30,000 or more cars off the road in a day by highlighting residents' desire to commute by bike, which supports the efforts to improve biking infrastructure. Visit BikeToWorkDay.co or click the link below for information on how to join. Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) also provides free promotional materials for businesses and station organizers at biketoworkday.co.
