Transportation Engineering Training Program

Program Overview

CDOT’s Transportation Engineering Training Program (TETP) develops and hosts roadway design and construction training for CDOT engineering staff, consultant partners, contractors and local agency personnel. TETP training emphasizes CDOT-specific processes and procedures and is available in a variety of learning formats, including:

  • Self-paced online e-learning
  • In-person instructor-led training (ILT)
  • Virtual instructor-led training (VILT)
  • Technical video training

Course Descriptions and Costs

TETP's instructor-led trainings and free online self-paced e-learnings are accessed through CDOT's learning management system, the State of Colorado (SOC) Learns Training Portal. Courses are organized into two curricula:

Use the course description spreadsheets to find training applicable to your current role or career goals. Select a course title to start taking an e-learning and to enroll in instructor-led training. TETP e-learnings are free for external partners and available year-round, whereas TETP instructor-led trainings are hosted in-person and virtually between October and May each fiscal year and are available for a nominal fee.

Need a SOC Learns account?

Visit the Access the LMS web page to request an account using your company contact information. Accounts are typically approved within two business days. You'll receive an email notification when your account is approved, although it may take up to 12 hours for your account permissions to process to be able to search for and take training.

Fiscal Year Training Schedules

The State of Colorado's fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30. TETP instructor-led courses are scheduled between October and May each fiscal year. The 2025 fiscal year training season has concluded and the 2026 fiscal year training schedule is currently in development. An announcement will be broadcasted in the fall to all external partners when instructor-led courses open for enrollment.

Two courses are being offered for free to external partners during summer 2025:

  1. Bicycle Facility Design Training: This full-day training (intended to be taken following the pedestrian training) provides a deep understanding of the design needs of a variety of bikeway users as well as a review of the current state of the practice in providing safe and comfortable bikeways.
  2. Pedestrian Facility Design Training: This full day training updates participants on current safety concerns as well as countermeasures to provide safe and comfortable pedestrian facilities along highways and arterial roads.
