Daytime single lane closures at the Eisenhower Johnson Memorial Tunnel for tunnel washing

September 15, 2023 - Central/Eastern Colorado - Work will take place Sept. 19, 20, 26 and 27

Clear Creek and Summit Counties — The Colorado Department of Transportation’s Eisenhower Tunnel maintenance team will wash the walls inside the tunnel bores one more time before the upcoming winter season. To carry out the tunnel washing, crews will close a single lane at a time in each bore. This work is planned for Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 19 and 20, and Sept. 26 and 27 from 6 a.m. to noon.

Traffic Impacts

  • Daytime single lane closures inside the Eisenhower Johnson Memorial Tunnel from 6 a.m. to noon on Sept. 19, 20, 26, and 27
  • The westbound direction of traffic (Eisenhower bore) will be impacted first, followed by the eastbound direction (Johnson bore)
  • Delays of five to 10 minutes are possible
  • Drivers should use caution and pay extra attention during this daytime work
  • Please be aware there are other projects occurring simultaneously on the I-70 Mountain Corridor, so drivers may encounter multiple work zones or lane closures during this work. For information on those projects, click here.

The following tips are to help you stay safe while traveling through maintenance and construction work zones.

  • Do not speed in work zones. Obey the posted speed limits.
  • Stay Alert! Expect the unexpected.
  • Watch for workers. Drive with caution.
  • Don't change lanes unnecessarily.
  • Avoid using mobile devices such as phones while driving in work zones.
  • Turn on headlights so that workers and other drivers can see you.
  • Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
  • Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
  • Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
  • Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
  • Be patient!
