Rockfall protection work south of Minturn next week on US 24

Eagle & Lake Counties — Crews will conduct work starting next week to reconstruct rockfall protection on US 24 south of Minturn. Work and traffic impacts are anticipated to begin the week of Nov. 6 and last through Nov. 16. Work hours will be Monday through Thursday, during 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. When work is underway, motorists should anticipate one-lane, alternating traffic and intermittent closures. Work is scheduled from mid morning to mid afternoon in order to reduce impacts on commuters. These impacts will take place at Mile Point 149, approximately four miles south of Minturn. Motorists and commuters from Leadville can also travel via CO 91 and I-70. The alternate route has a similar travel time.

The intermittent closures will allow crews to safely conduct rock scaling. The rockfall protection work is necessary for the section of roadway, which has a history of rockfall. CDOT hopes to conduct additional rockfall mitigation work in the area in the coming months.

Traffic Impacts

Starting Nov. 6, travelers should plan for the following impacts:

• Work on US 24 is anticipated to take place Monday, November 6 through Thursday, Nov. 16
• Scheduled work hours will be Monday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
• When work is underway, motorists should anticipate one-lane, alternating traffic and intermittent closures
• Work and traffic impacts will take place just south of Minturn, at Mile Point 149
• Work hours are scheduled to reduce impacts on commuters

• Do not speed in work zones. Obey the posted speed limits.
• Stay Alert! Expect the unexpected.
• Watch for workers. Drive with caution.
• Don't change lanes unnecessarily.
• Avoid using mobile devices such as phones while driving in work zones.
• Turn on headlights so that workers and other drivers can see you.
• Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
• Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
• Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
• Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
• Be patient!
