Multiple maintenance operations to occur on US 550 north of Durango beginning July 31

July 28, 2023 - Southwestern Colorado - Motorists can expect lane shifts and delays between Hermosa and Coal Bank Pass

La Plata County — The Colorado Department of Transportation will pave US 550 near Honeyville beginning Monday, July 31. Paving operations will move farther north near Rockwood later in the week and possibly continue through the next Monday, August 7.

An additional maintenance drilling operation will occur just north of Purgatory at Cascade Curve. Motorists should plan for alternating traffic and up to 15-minute delays on Monday, July 31.

Paving operations north of Durango were originally scheduled for July 25 to July 27 but were postponed due to asphalt production delays. This work is weather permitting.

Traffic Impacts

Daytime work hours range from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

  • Expect one-lane alternating traffic and lane shifts
  • Drivers may encounter periodic traffic stops and delays
  • Motorists will be guided by cones, signs and flagging personnel
  • Highway exits and access in and out of businesses may be limited at times

The following tips are to help you stay safe while traveling through maintenance and construction work zones.

  • Do not speed in work zones. Obey the posted speed limits.
  • Stay Alert! Expect the unexpected.
  • Watch for workers. Drive with caution.
  • Don't change lanes unnecessarily.
  • Avoid using mobile devices such as phones while driving in work zones.
  • Turn on headlights so that workers and other drivers can see you.
  • Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
  • Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
  • Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
  • Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
